Medical Education

We place a high priority on educational opportunities for medical students, residents and faculty. All third-year medical students rotate in the department for a direct patient care experience. Any interested fourth-year medical student is welcome to return for another rotation in the department to gain more in-depth exposure to neurological diseases.

In addition to providing continuing education for our colleagues, we also accept four new neurology residents each year for our ACGME-accredited residency training program and two new vascular neurology fellows each year. 

 

Research and Clinical Trials

At Prisma Health-USC Medical Group Neurology, we conduct clinical trials to look for new ways to treat a particular condition. Clinical trials are carefully controlled and follow specific protocols. They can examine the safety and/or the effectiveness of a particular treatment, including medications, medical treatments or device treatments.

The only way for a clinical trial to be successful is to have people who are willing to participate. Participants can help further medical knowledge and potentially help other people. Currently, we are conducting inpatient and outpatient stroke clinical trials, movement disorder clinical trials and multiple clinical trials involving various other neurological disorders.

 

Clinical Clerkship for MIII

Up to 10 percent of patients seen by primary care providers present with neurologic symptoms and pose neurologic questions to their physicians. Most of those patients never see a neurologist, which is why it's extremely important for primary care physicians to understand the general principles of clinical neurology. The best way to get that foundation of knowledge is through the two-week clinical neurology clerkship that is required in your third year of medical school. 

During your immersive clerkship, you'll be provided training in the evaluation and treatment of neurological disorders utilizing a variety of inpatient and outpatient experiences, didactic sessions and procedures. Closely-supervised patient encounters will give you the opportunity to develop skills in physician examination and neurological diagnosis. Your clerkship will give you the chance to recognize and treat neurological emergencies, including the possibility of active participation in such conditions as brain attack (stroke), meningoencephalitis and status epilepticus.

 

Residency Program

The neurology residency program, established in 2012, is fully-accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), emphasizing a multidisciplinary approach to the core competencies of patient care, medical knowledge, practice-based learning and improvement, interpersonal skills and communication, professionalism and systems-based practice.

 

Vascular Neurology Fellowship

This fellowship will give you a comprehensive, supervised, full-time educational experience in prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cerebrovascular diseases. This experience includes the management of patients with cerebrovascular disease and the integration of endovascular and neurosurgical therapy into the clinical management of patients.
