The University of South Carolina Department of Neurology is an academic medical department that features compassionate patient care, supportive education, and ground-breaking research.
The department’s neurologists care for patients in the inpatient setting by admitting patients to the neurology service and providing consultations. Our neurologists also provide consultations for acute stroke to several other hospitals via telemedicine. Our outpatient clinics provide care for general neurology conditions and neurologic subspecialties in epilepsy, headache, movement disorders, multiple sclerosis, neuromuscular disorders, stroke and TIA.
Neurology highly values its educational opportunities for medical students, residents, and faculty. All third-year medical students rotate in the department for a direct patient care experience. Any interested fourth-year medical student is welcome to return for another rotation in the department to gain more in-depth exposure to neurological diseases. The department accepts three new neurology residents each year for our ACGME-accredited residency training program. Neurology faculty provide learning opportunities to their colleagues through a variety of educational programs each year.
The department’s research program is constantly evolving. Our faculty have been successful in obtaining funding from federal agencies, industry, and foundations. Our research seeks to develop new treatments and prevention strategies for headache, movement disorders, multiple sclerosis, neuropathy, neuromuscular disorders, stroke and TIA.
The University of South Carolina Department of Neurology is affiliated with the Palmetto Health Hospitals system and the William Jennings Bryan Dorn VA Hospital.
